Charlize Theron was born and raised in Benoni, South Africa, a village near Johannesburg. At sixteen, she moved to Milan, Italy to pursue a modeling career.

Theron wasn't raised religious. As a child, her mother encouraged her to figure out faith and spirituality on her own. Theron said:

There you have it, Theron is pagan. But that might conflict with recent reports that she's taken up the celebrity religion du jour, Kabbalah. ## Flying on the left wing

Theron's politics are much less ambiguous than her religious views. She's a serious liberal.

Theron has participated in marches and rallies in support of her pro-choice stance on abortion<a class="source-citation" href="#http%3A%2F%2Fthecelebritycafe.com%2Factor%2Fcharlize-theron" title="Charlize Theron">[4]</a> and she has done work for People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA). The fashion model said of the use of fur for clothing:

The issue has caused Theron to question government interference in social issues. She once said:

>When government starts to tell us who can love and what is good love… I do have a problem with that. I do have a problem with the fact that our government hasn't stepped up enough to make this federal, to make [gay marriage] legal. Based on her financial contributions, however, our assumptions would be correct in this case.
