In an interview with GQ, talking about child abuse and The Australian Childhood Foundation

Tony Abbott said to me, ‘You know, I went to a Catholic school as a kid but no one did anything to me. Maybe I wasn’t good-looking enough.’ I’m sat there, like, ‘Is he kidding? Is he making light of this issue?’

In the The Australian Childhood Foundation website, where he's recognized as a Patron

Child abuse is Australia’s biggest social problem, I was lucky enough to grow up in a loving, supportive household, but my parents have been social workers for more than 20 years, and from them I know the lasting damage that abuse and neglect can cause. The trauma of abuse stays with children long after the threat has left them, unless they are helped to heal. I am also very appreciative of the work the Foundation does to prevent abuse before it has a chance to occur. Knowledge, information and connectedness are such powerful weapons in the fight against abuse, and the more we make ourselves aware of the issue of child abuse, the better we can support vulnerable children and their families within our community and keep them safe from harm.

I just signed up to the @YGAP @polishedman campaign! One in five children fall victim to physical and/or sexual violence, before they turn 18. That’s one too many. For the month of October, I’ll be painting one nail to represent this statistic and raise awareness and funds to end violence against children. In an interview with GQ, talking about his efforts to raise money to The Australian Childhood Foundation

A survey conducted a while ago asked members of the public what they think the number one concern is for the country. They said petrol prices, taxes and so on… but nobody said child abuse. It’s something that is difficult to talk about but our discomfort as adults is far less and in no comparison to what these children are going through… we need to act.
