Evangeline Lilly was born in Fort Saskatchewan, Alberta, Canada and grew up there and in Kelowna, British Columbia.

Lilly had some sort of deeply Christian upbringing. Sources disagree on the denomination, with some saying Baptist and/or Mennonite,<a class="source-citation" href="#http%3A%2F%2Fwww.theglobeandmail.com%2Farts%2Ftelevision%2Fthe-blooming-of-evangeline-lilly%2Farticle4351559%2F%23articlecontent" title="The blooming of Evangeline Lilly">[1]</a> some saying Evangelical and/or born-again Christian.<a class="source-citation" href="#http%3A%2F%2Fwww.nndb.com%2Fpeople%2F840%2F000096552%2F" title="Evangeline Lilly">[2]</a> Whatever it was, she ran with it. However, the actors she's worked with–and even Lilly herself to some extent–acknowledge the walking contradiction Lilly can be. For example, her Lost co-star, Jorge Garcia, said:

And Lilly said once:

One wonders if the secular world got its fangs into Lilly. Not only are these quotes indicative of some sort of internal struggle, we know she had her child out of wedlock.<a class="source-citation" href="#http%3A%2F%2Fwww.dailymail.co.uk%2Ftvshowbiz%2Farticle-1389855%2FEvangeline-Lilly-gives-birth-boy.html" title="Evangeline Lilly gives birth to a boy">[9]</a> Not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just not normally the route taken by former missionary, Bible camp counselors.


## Political role models

Lilly's politics are informed by her concern for the environment. The issues she raises are somewhat diverse, but a clean and healthy planet is the common thread. She has addressed the threat overpopulation might pose to the planet, saying:

And she's protested environmental travesties in her home country of Canada, including tar sands oil extraction in Northern Alberta and oil pipelines. She said:

It's always a bit of a stretch to call someone a liberal simply because they're concerned about the environment. But Lilly is clearly a liberal. Note her Hollywood role models (and the religious imagery) in this quote:

>Hollywood is the Sodom and Gomorrah of today. It's a world I avoid because it's destroying our culture. And yet, I've recently seen a turnaround. It's difficult to see the positive aspect of Michael Moore's message–poignant perhaps, but not necessarily positive. Maybe she takes that view because she's full-on left-wing. Let's hear your thoughts.
