In an interview with The 19th, talking about Jane Fonda Climate PAC

I’m disappointed, frankly, that President Biden has opened public lands for oil and gas development. This flies in the face of his earlier proclamations that indicated he understood that the climate crisis is a true existential one for human beings and the planet. What I’d like to see, and what most climate activists would like to see, is President Biden declaring a climate emergency, which would free up all kinds of financial and political resources for him to bring to bear on this crisis. Another extremely important thing that needs to happen is an ending to taxpayers’ subsidies of the fossil fuel industry. Currently we give them $20 billion every year. This is unconscionable and must be stopped. One of the provisions in the Build Back Better bill was an ending to these subsidies, but that was removed from the bill because of pressure from a group of moderate Democrats in Texas led by Rep. Henry Cuellar.

I am sickened and deeply disappointed that President Biden has given the go-ahead to Enbridge Line 3 in Minnesota. This belies his promises on the campaign trail to follow science and stop new fossil fuel development and cut our carbon emissions in half by 2030. All of us need to make our voices heard now and demand the President keep his promises. We want a livable future. #stopline3

He’s done a lot of very good things. But not enough. Not bold enough. And not fast enough. We’re up against time.

I went to the post office with Tulea several days ago to mail my ballot. And yesterday, having tracked it, I was told it had arrived and been counted! We have to make sure that Biden/Harris are elected and that, given some time and respite from the hate mongering and divisiveness the welcome mat will be pulled back from the militias and the selfishness and irresponsibility of the anti-maskers will be better understood.

I just think COVID is God’s gift to the left. That’s a terrible thing to say. I think it was a very difficult thing to send down to us, but it has ripped the Band-Aid off who he [Trump] is and what he stands for and what is being done to average people and working people in this country.

In an interview with The New York Times, on speaking to Trump’s daughter, Ivanka

I told her I wanted to try to have a meeting with her father, and that I was going to bring some very beautiful women who cared a lot about the climate and we were going to get on our knees and plead with him and tell him he would be the world’s biggest hero if he started to act to avert the climate crisis. And she laughed and said she’d look into it, and I never heard from her again. No surprise there.

In an op-ed to the New York Times

In just the past year, the United States has experienced deadly wildfires, devastating flooding and the hottest month ever recorded, all driven, at least in part, by climate change. What is President Trump’s response? He’s pulling the United States out of the Paris agreement and rolling back 85 environmental safeguards, including important and consequential climate initiatives. This should not be surprising; he once called climate change a “hoax.” The Senate majority leader, Mitch McConnell, is also blocking efforts to deal with the climate crisis. We have reached a time in this fight when the only way forward is to organize, mobilize and vote politicians who won’t act out of office. We must overcome the power of the fossil fuel industry and elect an environmental champion for president and a congressional leadership ready to move forward aggressively with a Green New Deal to save us and the planet, starting the day they take office.

I hate what he stands for, what he does, what he says. I feel that I understand a little bit — this is a man who was traumatized as a child by his father, who had a mother that didn’t protect him. And the behavior is the language of the wounded. […] You never want to criticize Trump, and you don’t want to criticize Fox [News]. You want to tell people things they don’t know. […] You have to have empathy for him. And I think that that has to also transfer to the people who voted for him. Some of them, you can’t possibly persuade otherwise because they’re white supremacists. You know, or they’re so far off the spectrum, for their own traumatic reasons, probably. But there’s a whole bunch of Trump voters who we have to open our hearts to and understand why they voted the way they did.

In an interview with Variety, talking about Donald Trump

The most immediate fear is what’s happening to our planet because that’s not reversible and it’s very dire. Secondly, I fear that our democracy is being taken from us. However, the good part is, as Jerry Brown recently said, “He’s totally negative energy.” Except maybe when he’s with a porn star! Isn’t that terrible to be able to say that about your president? He’s total negative energy and he moves in the world, and it releases positive energy from other people. That’s why so many people are rising up and being active that never were before; running for office when they never considered doing it before. It’s not just because he set the bar so low. It’s because, “Help!” I’ve got to be a part of saving this country and everything we stand for. So there’s a good side to it.
