Lucy Liu was born and raised in Queens, New York though she attended high school in Manhattan.

Liu's parents are both immigrants from China and they are Buddhists.<a class="source-citation" href="#http%3A%2F%2Fwww.patheos.com%2Fblogs%2Ffaithgoespop%2F2011%2F10%2Flucy-liu-is-open-to-religion-but-not-a-particular-one%2F" title="Lucy Liu is Open to Religion, But Not a Particular One">[1]</a> So naturally, she has experience in that religion. However, it doesn't appear she's still a devout Buddhist. In fact, she's quite eloquent and open-minded when it comes to the many variations of religious belief. She acknowledges pervasive ignorance about religions and encourages education, saying:

Liu has been tempted by the sirens of Hollywood religion. She has openly admitted to studying Kabbalah, saying:

None of this really helps us discern exactly what Liu's personal beliefs are. But if I was to speculate, I would say she views religion from a distance–an intellectual curiosity and something of use to many members of society–just not her.


## Hollywood, with a twist

Liu is among the camp of celebrities who feel they shouldn't wear their political affiliations on their sleeve. Rather, she feels that celebrities should focus their social-improvement efforts on non-partisan charities, which she does.<a class="source-citation" href="#http%3A%2F%2Fwww.looktothestars.org%2Fcelebrity%2Flucy-liu" title="Lucy Liu&apos;s Charities, Events, and Causes">[5]</a> She said:

>When you are in the public eye you do have the ability to make a difference. I have my own opinion about party politics, but my main focus is for children. However, I guess she just can't help it because her political affiliations are really not that difficult to find. Furthermore, she supports marriage equality and even made a [video](http://www.hrc.org/videos/category/c/videos-lucy-liu-for-hrcs-new-yorkers-for-marriage-equality#.UP2QC-gZ-Bg) in hopes of convincing citizens of New York state to vote for the legalization of gay marriage. She said:
