Efron grew up in Southern California, quite possibly the most godless place on the planet, in a non-religious family. It might be the name or Zac's grandfather because Efron is regularly referred to as a Jew. However, you aren't really Jewish unless your mother is Jewish (according to tradition) and besides, Efron himself has come out and said he's not religious:

Maybe when Efron's career goes down the toilet or he's blasted for back-taxes or he finally makes it in with the Hollywood circles who are constantly chattering on about their political views, he'll have more to say. But at this point, Efron has been very quiet about politics. Maybe someday we can expect some opinions from Efron, but at this point, we can give him the benefit of the doubt and assume he's just too classy to talk about his personal views.
