A profound statement that illuminates the crisis this nation is facing right now. Equality is a right for all Americans and we must do whatever it takes to protect that right.

Speaking at the United Nations in Geneva

There is a certain amount of irony in the sense that Hollywood is often held up as some sort of bastion of progressive ideals, yet is actually in reality the exact opposite. On some of the most basic rights that we are starting, thank goodness, to take for granted in other disciplines, in other businesses, whether it is inclusion, pay equality, representation, diversity, you name it, we fall way behind.

We should all feel deserved and supported in expressing our right to being our whole selves, limited by nothing regardless of ethnicity, gender, identity, sexuality, ability, religion or any other identity that we choose.[…] It is dangerous to promote an identity blind narrative. […] We must not separate ourselves from each community. We must be one.

She can also just forcefully shove a buttery, delicious croissant :croissant: in daddy’s mouth when daddy is on a very strict diet. #JasmineLia #WomensEqualityDay

We do not stand for inequality, and me personally, I’m a feminist. We stand for equality. I believe in equality regardless of gender, regardless of race, regardless of sexual orientation, regardless of political opinion. I believe that we all need to come together in a very compassionate way. […] Let’s even things out and let’s give each other a chance and let’s listen to one another.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, revealing the inspiration behind his song, “Sign of the Times"

Most of the stuff that hurts me about what’s going on at the moment is not politics, it’s fundamentals. Equal rights. For everyone, all races, sexes, everything… “Sign of the Times” came from “This isn’t the first time we’ve been in a hard time, and it’s not going to be the last time.” The song is written from a point of view as if a mother was giving birth to a child and there’s a complication. The mother is told, “The child is fine, but you’re not going to make it.” The mother has five minutes to tell the child, “Go forth and conquer.”

I don’t talk about politics often. I don’t feel like it’s my place to tell you how to think in that regard. This channel is a place of entertainment (hopefully) and escape from the chaos that runs the rest of your world. However, I will never shy away from encouraging you guys to better yourselves and the world around you. It’s easy to think of yourself as insignificant in the turmoil that consumes the political landscape but there’s always more that you can do. You are an essential piece of your community but ONLY if you work towards it. To make change in the world and in yourself takes time, effort, and most of all dedication. It’s a commitment that the vast majority of people overlook because they’re consumed by the short term. The only thing I have ever wanted is to be a leader to guide you towards something better. But I can’t hide behind a vague idea of what “better” is so here are a few things that I firmly believe in: 1. No matter who you are; no matter your race, religion, or gender you have the unalienable right to live your life in peace and happiness. 2. Healthcare is a right, not a business. 3. We should leave our children a better world than the one we have now.

In an article written for Glamour

As a parent, helping your kids to rise above these constraints is a constant learning process. Michelle and I have raised our daughters to speak up when they see a double standard or feel unfairly judged based on their gender or race—or when they notice that happening to someone else. It’s important for them to see role models out in the world who climb to the highest levels of whatever field they choose. And yes, it’s important that their dad is a feminist, because now that’s what they expect of all men. It is absolutely men’s responsibility to fight sexism too. And as spouses and partners and boyfriends, we need to work hard and be deliberate about creating truly equal relationships.

In an interview with Variety, on producing ABC family show The Fosters

When I was growing up, the families around me were not reflected in television or film. I wanted to be part of “The Fosters” because of the show’s depiction of a diverse society. While our family compositions might differ, ultimately the experiences of a family are universal, and I’m proud to be part of a show that reminds us that regardless of skin color or sexual orientation, we can all identify with one another.
