To mark the end of Pride, I did an interview on the Today Show this morning about why I support The Trevor Project. The reasons behind my support for this amazing organisation didn’t make it to the final edit which was upsetting to me as I thought it was very important for everyone to truly know about the lifesaving service The Trevor Project provides. So I am sharing the reasons for my support for them here. Getting to grips with your sexuality as a young person can be daunting under any circumstances and for some LGTBQ+ youth it can be a period of real trauma. It can be a very vulnerable time to go through and the sad fact is that some don’t survive it. The Trevor Project provides 24/7 crisis support in the US through phone, chat and text services.

June is Pride month for the LGBTQ community. We must come together to secure the safety of black LGBTQ people in jail and immigration detention. With 1 in 2 transgender prisoners sexually abused it is incredibly important to get them released as quick as possible.

In an interview on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon

To be really honest, you know, we’re all living in one world and the world is just getting smaller and smaller. […] When you think about it, the responses in the US to climate change, to refugees, to the pandemic affect the whole world. I think it’s really important to understand that we’re all going through this together. We all want to see change, we all want to see equality and I really believe that voting is so incredibly important. The young generation needs to get out and vote and we need to make sure our voices are heard, and I know it’s not the be-all and end-all of seeing change, but I think it’s incredibly, incredibly important. That’s something that I champion a lot.

Seeing the refugee situation at the moment makes me quite upset, especially everything to do with Brexit, because I feel like young kids from all over the world won’t have the same opportunities that I did.

I will stand by you all for your love and beliefs and I am proud and grateful that you felt safe enough to show your pride at my show. What you did takes a lot of bravery. I always want my music to bring strength, hope and unity. I was horrified by what happened and I send love to all my fans involved.

In an interview with GQ

For a female artist, it takes a lot more to be taken seriously if you’re not sat down at a piano or with a guitar, you know? For a male artist, people instantly assume they write their own music, but for women, they assume it’s all manufactured. […] Even from school, growing up with kiss chase or whatever, it’s been ingrained in our heads that boys will be boys and its harmless fun and no big deal and to brush things off. […] I’m lucky in that I haven’t really had any sexual harassment in any way. But I think [#MeToo] is so important. [...] For lots of females, be it actresses, singers, models, no matter what it is, it’s not being able to have the right to dress and wear how and what you want and be taken seriously.
