In an interview with Teen Vogue, while talking about being raised as an Evangelical Christian, Katy Perry said

Education was not the first priority. My education started in my 20s, and there is so much to learn still. [She wasn't] allowed to interact with gay people. There is some generational racism. But I came out of the womb asking questions, curious from day one, and I am really grateful for that: My curiosity has led me here.

In an interview with Marie Claire, Katy Perry said

I don't believe in a heaven or a hell or an old man sitting on a throne. I believe in a higher power bigger than me because that keeps me accountable. Accountability is rare to find, especially with people like myself, because nobody wants to tell you something you don't want to hear. I actually don't trust people who start to turn on me because they get scared of telling me the truth. I'm not Buddhist, I'm not Hindu, I'm not Christian, but I still feel like I have a deep connection with God. I pray all the time—for self-control, for humility. There's a lot of gratitude in it. Just saying 'thank you' sometimes is better than asking for things.

In an interview with Teen Vogue, Katy Perry said

I was really disheartened for a while; it just brought up a lot of trauma for me… Misogyny and sexism were in my childhood: I have an issue with suppressive males and not being seen as equal. I felt like a little kid again being faced with a scary, controlling guy. I wouldn’t really stand for it in my work life, because I have had so much of that in my personal life. But it’s an awakening that was necessary because I think we were in a false utopia…we can’t ever get that stagnant again. I am so grateful that young people know the names of senators. I think teenage girls are going to save the world! That age group just seems to be holding people accountable. They have a really strong voice—and a loud one.

Summary

Katy Perry is the daughter of two Protestant Christian pastors, but doesn't seem to be too concerned with the generally conservative standards of her faith, though she still makes comments that make me think she's got a little religion in her.

She's a liberal and has championed gay rights.

Editorial

Katy Perry grew up in Santa Barbara with two pastors for parents. She even sang in the church choir.

It was a strict religious household and, like many children from religious families, she has pretty much turned her back on it.

For her the choice to get out of religion was a result of hearing some great rock n' roll. She said:

The heavens opened my eyes when I stumbled upon a Queen record and I was forever saved.[1]

And let's face it, she really went all-out in her rebellion of hard-core Christianity with lyrics like this:

I kissed a girl and I like it.[2]

Still, there's some signs that she's not totally non-religious, and definitely not an atheist. She said:

I am sensitive to Russell [Brand, Perry's then-husband] taking the Lord's name in vain and to Lady Gaga putting a rosary in her mouth. I think when you put sex and spirituality in the same bottle and shake it up, bad things happen.[3]

"Fucking absolutely crazy"

Perry hasn't been shy about talking politics. She's socially liberal and has come out for gay rights, saying:

I am a gay activist and I say that proudly. I voted no on Prop 8 [California's Nov. 4, 2008, amendment declaring that marriage is defined as a union solely between a man and a woman], of course.[4]

She's even come out against the state of American society and her part in it, saying:

I think we are largely in desperate need of revolutionary change in the way our mindset is. Our priority is fame, and people's wellness is way low. I say this knowing full well that I'm a part of the problem. I'm playing the game, though I am trying to reroute. Anyway, not to get all politically divulging and introspective, but the fact that America doesn't have free health care drives me fucking absolutely crazy, and is so wrong.[5]
