Katy Perry

The Religion and Political Views of Katy Perry

Summary

Religion

Katy Perry is the daughter of two Protestant Christian pastors, but doesn't seem to be too concerned with the generally conservative standards of her faith, though she still makes comments that make me think she's got a little religion in her.

Political Views

She's a liberal and has championed gay rights.

Wiki

Katy Perry grew up in Santa Barbara with two pastors for parents. She even sang in the church choir.

It was a strict religious household and, like many children from religious families, she has pretty much turned her back on it.

For her the choice to get out of religion was a result of hearing some great rock n' roll. She said:

The heavens opened my eyes when I stumbled upon a Queen record and I was forever saved.[1]

And let's face it, she really went all-out in her rebellion of hard-core Christianity with lyrics like this:

I kissed a girl and I like it.[2]

Still, there's some signs that she's not totally non-religious, and definitely not an atheist. She said:

I am sensitive to Russell [Brand, Perry's then-husband] taking the Lord's name in vain and to Lady Gaga putting a rosary in her mouth. I think when you put sex and spirituality in the same bottle and shake it up, bad things happen.[3]

"Fucking absolutely crazy"

Perry hasn't been shy about talking politics. She's socially liberal and has come out for gay rights, saying:

I am a gay activist and I say that proudly. I voted no on Prop 8 [California's Nov. 4, 2008, amendment declaring that marriage is defined as a union solely between a man and a woman], of course.[4]

She's even come out against the state of American society and her part in it, saying:

I think we are largely in desperate need of revolutionary change in the way our mindset is. Our priority is fame, and people's wellness is way low. I say this knowing full well that I'm a part of the problem. I'm playing the game, though I am trying to reroute. Anyway, not to get all politically divulging and introspective, but the fact that America doesn't have free health care drives me fucking absolutely crazy, and is so wrong.[5]
